A democratic party in turmoil
To many Americans, the big problem with the democratic party is that it has moved too far to the left. Despite this, the party is finding itself moving even further to the left. Leaders like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are leading the left-wing of the party and they tend to get increasingly powerful as the moderates are disappearing. There even used to be conservative democrats, in particular in the south, but they are long gone. The democrats seem to pick battles far outside mainstream America and support men in women’s sport, they are for more illegal immigrants, they are against law and order, they support Hamas and are openly antisemitic and they are against more efficiency in government. The list could go on.
There is no wonder voters are turning against the democrats. Even Schumer has been targeted by his party with calls for Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to challenge him in the senate primary. The primary challenge might be a strategy to renew the party with younger candidates. A prime antagonist is David Hogg, the 25-year-old anti-gun progressive activist who was recently named a vice-chair of the democratic national committee. The move aimed to show young voters the party was open to their generation and ideas. His aim is to trade old democrats for radical new ones.
Democratic leaders in Congress got more bad news this week after new polling showed confidence in their leadership has reached a historic low. Democratic leaders have struggled to mount an effective response to Trump and the republicans since their defeat in the 2024 election, in which they lost control of the senate and the White House while the GOP held its majority in the house of representatives. Many Democratic voters, in particular young radicals, have expressed frustration and some within the party are pushing for primary challenges against longtime incumbents.
New polling carried out by Gallup from April 1 to 14 showed that confidence in Democratic congressional leadership has hit an all-time low since the organization has surveyed voters on the issue going back to 2001. Just 25% of respondents expressed confidence in democratic congressional leadership, down 9 points from the previous historic low of 34% set in 2023.
In March, CNN released new polling of 1,206 U.S. adults carried out by SSRS, which showed the democratic party’s favorability rating standing at just 29%. According to CNN, that marked a record low in the media outlet’s polling data going all the way back to 1992.
The democrats’ problems are many. Years of focus on bizarre political causes like gender identity, white supremacy, open borders, and utopian climate and economic policies; and feckless leadership that can’t quite figure out how to go after Trump effectively. The 2026 midterm election will be a key test of the party, with control of the house and senate up for grabs. While most analysts believe it will be difficult for democrats to win back the senate, the house, with its small margin, could be within the party’s reach.
The democrats are drifting to the left but will eventually realize that the only way to win again will be to develop a more moderate agenda and find new centrist leaders. The two-party system works best when the competition is over voters who are slightly to the right or left of center. The need to attract these swing voters has a moderating influence on the government as a whole. Presidents temper their agenda so that voting for it does not cost their members their seats, especially in the house of representatives, where control has been shifting in recent years. Trump lost the house two years after the GOP swept the 2016 election, and Biden lost it in the 2022 midterms. From that point on, most of their domestic agendas were dead. The pattern shows that voters punish presidents and parties that are seen as trying to move too far from the middle. The democratic party still has a change to change and to choose a more moderate path. If they do, they will have better chances for future electoral victories, including in 2026.
