USA 250

The United States is celebrating its 250th anniversary. The milestone centers on the Declaration of Independence from 1776, featuring everything from reflections on the country’s history to large-scale events that are drawing national attention and debate. Trump has positioned himself at the center of the celebrations through Freedom 250. The events feature fighter jet flyovers, a Great American State Fair on the National Mall, and a massive “Salute to America” fireworks display on July 4. Alongside these White House-led events, America250, a bipartisan, congressionally chartered group established a decade ago, has been coordinating exhibitions, educational initiatives, and local celebrations across the country to engage Americans and honor historical milestones. The Smithsonian Institution is hosting special exhibits focusing on the nation’s successes and future, including “In Pursuit of Life, Liberty & Happiness”.

The 250th milestone coincides with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Fan Zones on the National Mall and matches being played simultaneously in U.S. cities like Philadelphia and Houston. While the milestone is a major moment for civic reflection, polls indicate the festivities are taking place amidst a divided political climate, but this is hardly news as the political scene has been increasingly polarized for a while and increasing since Obama, the Big Divider, was in office.

It has been a country with endless problems since the beginning in areas such as the murder of millions of the indigenous populations and sending the rest to reservations, or camps. The institution of slavery shaped the nation’s economy and politics and became its greatest moral and political conflict. Most of the political leaders, such as Washington and Jefferson, were slave owners. In 1861–1865, the American Civil War followed, the deadliest war in U.S. history, resulting in roughly 620,000–750,000 deaths and preserving the Union while ending slavery. At least on paper as it took another hundred years of reconstruction and racial segregation. After the Civil War, efforts to rebuild the South were followed by discrimination, disenfranchisement, and segregation. Despite this, industrialization followed which led to rapid growth and wealth but also monopolies, poor labor conditions, and unsafe factories. The Great Depression followed with massive unemployment, bank failures, and widespread poverty affected millions of Americans.

The imperfections have continued with inequality, high crime rates, continued racial tensions, political dysfunction and polarization, high healthcare costs, wealth is highly concentrated, while many households face stagnant wages and rising living costs, housing affordability has become a major issue in many cities, gun violence, federal debt has grown to historically high levels, the U.S. has many world-class universities, but K–12 education quality varies greatly depending on location and funding and many kids are not able to read or write, student loan debt remains a significant burden for many graduates, home prices and rents have risen faster than incomes in many metropolitan areas. the U.S. has one of the highest incarceration rates in the world, much a result of having more than 300 million guns that are privately owned, mass immigration, rampant political corruption, main focus is the military industrial complex, imperfect taxation system favoring the wealthy asset owners, and the list can continue.

At the same time, the United States continues to have significant positives such as being the world’s largest economy, having leading universities and research institutions, strong culture of entrepreneurship and technology innovation, significant military and diplomatic influence. The U.S. benefits from vast natural resources, extensive farmland, access to both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, navigable rivers that support commerce and friendly neighbors compared with many other major powers. The main reason for the success of the U.S. is its constitution and the system. Freedom creates opportunity and the U.S. has historically offered a combination of freedom of speech, freedom of religion, freedom of movement of capital with strong protections for private property and an open business environment. Combine this with political competition and regular elections. Those elements encourage people to take risks, invent new technologies, start businesses, and challenge existing ideas. As a result, the U.S. is and will remain the strongest country in the world.
