Is there room for the America Party?

According to Elon Musk, the two-party system is broken, and he just launched a new political party to prove it. Musk announced on X, the social media platform he owns, the formation of the “America Party,” calling it a direct response to what he described as a corrupt political establishment that no longer represents the American people. The announcement followed a viral July 4 poll on X, where Musk asked whether voters wanted independence from what he called the two-party system. Over 1.2 million votes were cast, with 65.4% saying “yes.”

Musk posted “When it comes to bankrupting our country with waste & graft, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy. Today, the America Party is formed to give you back your freedom.” The move came just after Trump signed the “big, beautiful bill” into law at the White House. The sweeping $3.3 trillion legislation includes tax cuts, infrastructure spending and stimulus measures and has drawn criticism from fiscal conservatives and libertarians. Musk has previously warned that unchecked spending by both parties threatens the long-term health of the economy. Musk had been tasked with leading DOGE to reduce costs and drive efficiencies, but Musk’s efforts are undermined by increased government spending. Instead of trying to reduce or close the deficit, Trump decided to increase it.

The new party, according to Musk’s posts, will target a few key seats in Congress. The goal is to create a swing bloc powerful enough to hold the balance of power and block what Musk sees as the worst excesses of both Republicans and Democrats. This is a clever approach instead of going for the presidency. Some on the right voiced concern in the comments section that a third party could split the conservative vote and help Democrats win more easily. This could be true, but the goal is to gain enough seats in Congress to be relevant and to force cooperation and coalitions.

Third parties have traditionally had a difficult time gaining ground in American politics as the system is built for two dominant parties. With the Electoral College, winner-take-all elections and strict ballot access laws, outsiders cannot meaningfully compete. One of the biggest third-party efforts in recent history was Ross Perot’s 1992 run. He earned nearly 19% of the popular vote as an independent but didn’t win a single Electoral College vote. Perot did pave the way for Bill Clinton’s victory against George Bush as Perot mostly too votes from Bush. It was the closest a third-party candidate got to the White House after President Teddy Roosevelt’s famed Bull Moose Party run in 1912 against his onetime protégé, William Howard Taft. Others, like Ralph Nader, have tried with the Green Party, and Gary Johnson with the Libertarian Party, but no third-party candidate has come close to winning the Presidency.

Musk is not focused on the Presidency, but gaining power in Congress. Musk has stated that the America Party is focused on deficit reduction and has advocated for the party to be fiscally conservative. The party’s platform is to reduce debt, modernize the military with artificial intelligence, cut regulations, and encourage more births.

Musk, a naturalized American citizen who was born in South Africa, is ineligible to run for the U.S. presidency and has not said who will lead the party or the nature of its structure. The America Party could gain legitimacy in the 2028 elections if dissatisfaction with the two-party system mounted over dismal economic conditions. Musk could negatively affect the Republican Party in the 2026 elections by focusing on competitive seats in the House of Representatives and the Senate.

A Quantus Insights survey found that around 40% of Americans would potentially support Elon Musk if he were to launch a third political party. 14% said they’d be “very likely” to vote for it, 26% “somewhat likely,” while 38% were unlikely to support it, and the rest were unsure. The poll revealed strong interest among male Republicans and nearly half of independent men, while older and Democratic voters were more skeptical.

Musk stated that the America Party could focus on “two or three Senate seats” and “eight to ten House districts” later suggesting that the party would run in the 2026 elections. Trump slammed the South African-born billionaire and his plan to introduce a third major political party and dismissed Musk’s move as ridiculous and defended his own party’s track record. Trump also wrote on his Truth Social platform, stating, “I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely ‘off the rails,’ essentially becoming a train wreck over the past five weeks.”

Musk, who was once a close ally of Trump during his leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), broke ranks with the president after the passage of a controversial tax and spending legislation. Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill” eliminated tax incentives for electric vehicles, which is bound to affect Musk, who owns the electric car-making company Tesla. As the legislation progressed through Congress, Musk warned he would create a new political entity if what he called an “insane spending bill” became law.

Musk’s significant financial injections into political favorites, including an estimated $250 million spent supporting Trump in the 2024 election, could influence the 2026 midterms, particularly if he devotes considerable resources to the endeavor. However, the move may also pose risks for Musk, whose companies, including Tesla and SpaceX, benefit from substantial government contracts. Both parties will do anything they can to stop Musk. It is unclear if Musk can change the current corrupt two-party system as his efforts will meet unprecedented resistance. But his intensions of reducing the country’s deficit and create a more efficient government will likely resonate with some voters. He has also shown that the existing parties are not interesting in changing anything, just continue the spending and holding onto power, so the America Party will also play a role as an outsider and an alternative. There is definitely room for another party if the two existing parties will let another party in.
