Romanian coup d’etat

There was recently an election in Romania, but it is difficult to find accurate information about what happened as the election was annulled. Apart from being known as one of the most corrupt countries in Europe, Romania is a strategically important country located at the crossroads of Central, Eastern and Southeast Europe. It borders Ukraine to the north and east, Hungary to the west, Serbia to the southwest, Bulgaria to the south, Moldova to the east, and the Black Sea to the southeast. It has a population of 19 million people. Romania is a member of the European Union and NATO.

The Romanian state is attempting a coup d’état in order to cling to power, according to a candidate in the country’s disputed presidential elections. The annulment of the elections on December 6 after the surprise first-round victory of outsider Călin Georgescu is a plot by politicians and courts to prevent political transfer and radical change in Bucharest’s policy towards Ukraine.

The reaction of the European Union to the annulment has been shameful. It is not unexpected though as they all want him to lose. This is happening in the open, and there is basically no reaction from democratically elected nations anywhere in Europe.

Georgescu, a nationalist politician, has said that he would end all support for Ukraine if elected. Georgescu, whose only election campaigning has been on social media, said he would make the Romanian people his priority.

The EPP (European People’s party) and the Socialists are backing this coup d’etat and they are backing the current undemocratic government. Romania’s political landscape has been thrown into chaos by the constitutional court’s decision. It is unclear if the Bucharest parliament will be able to function when it meets in coming days as there are moves to invalidate the mandates of parliamentarians sympathetic to Georgescu.

No-one knows when new presidential elections will take place, or if Georgescu will be allowed to stand. On absurd government allegations that Russia interfered in the first election round, allegedly via social media and TikTok in particular. While intelligence has reportedly been declassified and shown to the constitutional court, none had been made public. Court members are political appointees and therefore biased, one could conclude.

Basically, the court annulled the presidential elections without any substantial proof of foreign interference as they were unhappy with the outcome. 10 million votes were annulled by a system that fears the will of the people. It’s unprecedented inside the European Union and inside the free world, inside civilized, democratic countries. Despite this, there is radio silence from the EU.

Georgescu won the first round of the presidential vote, garnering 23%. Elena Lasconi, of the opposition Save Romania Union, secured 19% as was due to face Georgescu in a runoff. The term of the current president, Klaus Iohannis, is due to end later in December, though he is now expected to continue in a caretaker capacity. He has been in power for ten years.

The European Commission has opened a formal investigation into TikTok after concluding there were serious indications of foreign interference in the recent Romanian presidential election using the video-sharing platform. There is no way this will be an objective, impartial investigation. The truth is that there was just a coup d’etat in Romania and the EU is going along with this as there is too much at stake, related to the EU, NATO, Ukraine, and Russia.
