The assassination of Charlie Kirk
The significance of the killing of Kirk should not be underestimated. For young people and students across the U.S., he was already a living legend, now turned into a martyr for the right-wing movement. Charles Kirk was a political activist, author, and media personality. He co-founded the conservative organization Turning Point USA (TPUSA) in 2012 when he was only 18. The Washington Post described him as one of the most prominent voices on the right. President Trump, at a memorial event at the Pentagon on the anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, announced he will posthumously award Charlie Kirk the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The president ordered all U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff until Sunday evening.
Charlie Kirk’s reach and influence over the conservative community was a crucial factor not only in the Republican party’s message, but also to Trump’s political rise. Though Kirk was not a White House staffer, he was a constant and visible presence at the White House. Kirk, who was known as the “Trump whisperer,” was deeply involved in vetting top positions for the administration since the election and was in constant communication with top advisers and the president himself.
Trump had attended many events hosted by Kirk’s conservative advocacy group, “Turning Point USA,” which helped to promote the president, especially with high school and college-age voters. The group and Kirk had a huge following with conservatives, particularly men, and he was able to parlay that popularity into support for Trump’s campaign. During the 2016 Republican National Convention, Kirk spoke to an enthusiastic crowd as one of the event’s youngest speakers. During the campaign, he worked with Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump and Lara Trump on the trail, and assisted them with their social media outreach. Some considered Kirk to be an extended member of the Trump family.
Kirk began his political punditry while in college, writing essays for conservative publications like Breitbart News and The Daily Caller. Turning Point gained popularity among conservative circles, particularly younger members. The organization boasts on its website that it currently has a presence on over 3,500 high school and college campuses nationwide, over 250,000 student members, and over 450 full- and part-time staff all across the country.
After Trump was elected to office, Kirk used his influence to speak out against the president’s opponents and attack liberal policies. Kirk thought Trump won the 2020 election, which seems increasingly correct, and he shared his views on the controversial mandated COVID-19 vaccine. He remained close with Trump after he left office in 2021 and continued to push his ideas during tours to college campuses, his podcast, essays and other media appearances.
During the 2024 election, Turning Point helped Trump with get-out-the-vote operations in battleground states targeting smaller groups of engaged voters. He also tried to influence the outcome of the vote by impelling Nebraska to implement a winner-take-all electoral system and encouraging Republican leaders to make that change.
Kirk became a frequent presence at the White House during Trump’s second term, in some cases in the Oval Office during major events such as the swearing in of Jeanine Pirro as the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia in May. Kirk showed support for Trump for his decision to strike Iran’s nuclear facilities in June. Netanyahu reacted to his death by stating he was a true friend of Israel.
Kirk promoted conservative and Trump-aligned causes. He espoused a variety of controversial views, especially regarding his opposition to abortion, LGBTQ rights, his criticism of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Martin Luther King Jr., and his promotion of Christian nationalism, and claims of electoral fraud in 2020. Nobody will ever understand how Joe Biden got more than 81 million voters, the most in history by a wide margin. Also, it is unclear why the democrats are so focused on transexual rights, and Krik brought this up for discussion.
Kirk was shot and killed while speaking at a TPUSA event on the campus of Utah Valley University. Moments before the crack of a gunshot changed everything, thousands of students had gathered under clear blue skies at an idyllic Utah college to hear from a man considered a rock star in conservative campus politics. The assassination images will be hard to forget, particularly for the many young conservatives for whom Kirk held celebrity status.
Kirk’s killing is both another episode of shocking gun violence in America, and the latest in an ever-lengthening line of recent political violence. It is difficult to divine where American politics goes from here, but the trajectory is bleak. It is a fundamentally sick country. Violence begets violence. Increasingly divisive rhetoric, fueled by social media echo chambers and easy access to firearms, leads to raw nerves and a heightened potential for bloodshed. The U.S. was born with violence and has a violent history with the murders of millions of indigenous people, land grabbing like the West and Hawaii, brutal slave trade, oppression of opponents and global imperialism. It is hard to change that culture and with more than 400 million civilian-owned firearms in the country, it is difficult to stop shootings and violence. Charlie Kirk will become a new James Dean for the far-right movement and will likely always be remembered.
